“Brazil: A Cultural Continent – An introduction”

“The Brazilian Alan Lomax” – Alfredo Bello aka DJ Tudo is an important Brazilian traditional researcher and an a well known producer in the field of ‘Modern Brazilian Music’.

Aside the production of different artists, he runs his own project: “DJ Tudo e sua gente de todo lugar”, a mix of Brazilian traditional music with electronic and contemporary elements. With this project he has released five albums and one DVD: “Garrafada” 2008, “Nos quintais do Mundo” 2010, DVD “Nos quintais do Mundo Melhor” 2012, “Pancada Motor – Manifesto da Festa” 2014 “Gaia Musica vol.1 – Brazil North India, Indonesia and Mali” 2015 and “Gaia Musicva vol. 2 – brazil Morrocco” 2017. Brazilian traditions crossing with music and culture around the world.

In eighteen years Tudo collected more than 2.000 hours of audio, 1.200 hours of video and hundreds of photos. The website selomundomelhor.org is a reference about Brazilian Culture, the label Mundo Melhor released 32 titles.

Lecture
Alfredo will introduce a bit of the rich and complex culture that exist in Brazil and introduce the audience to many aspects of Brazilian culture and history, breeded by 3 cultures: indigenous, african and european.

One introdution about the history of Brazil, explaining the african, native and european heritage of Brazilian culture. Using google maps to show where the tradition is (or was) happening, he will talk a little about the tradition and show 3 minutes of vídeo of the tradition from Mundo Melhor collection.

Here we see our native Indians, the first inhabitants of Brazil. I will approach the history of the indigenous, their contact with the Portuguese and their struggle to keep a live and strong culture.

This is known as Congado, a catholic afro-descendants tradition. Congado will introduce its meanings, tradition and history.

These are the most important Brazilian traditions:
– Congado: The oldest and most important in several areas in Brasil.
– Sambas: Not every samba is a samba carioca, there are different sambas all over Brasil. – Carimbó from Pará (Amazon rainforest)
– Cocos: we have many Cocos in Northeast.
– Maracatus
– Banda de pifes
– Folias de Reis
– Many others traditions

Also we can show many references of Brazilian contemporary music like Chico Science, Tom Zé, Tropicália, Bossa Nova and others artists to show connections with Brazilian traditional culture.
